New professorial appointment of Prof. Dr. Petra Lucht

Chair of "Gender in STEM and Urban and Regional Planning. Feminist Studies in Science, Technology and Society (Feminist STS)"

Since August 2017, Petra Lucht holds the Chair of "Gender in STEM and Urban and Regional Planning/ Feminist Studies in Science, Technology and Society (Feminist STS)" at the ZIFG. The orientation of this newly established Chair at the Technische Universität of Berlin is unique in the german context. Inter and transdisciplinary approaches in gender studies are brought together with a broad range of subjects and paradigms in STEM and Urban and Regional Planning Sciences. The reference to Feminist Studies in Science, Technology and Society aims at research with socially relevant contents and applications.

By interacting with actors outside of academia —e.g. in politics, in the media, and the economy— research, development, and innovation in STEM and Urban and Regional Planning induce social change at the local, regional, national, and global levels. There is, however, hardly any explicit integration of gender and diversity research approaches into these changes. This has consequences for the continuation, re-establishment, and re-structuring of social inequalities, norms, and regulations –all of which carry, implicitly and explicitly, gender and diversity dimensions. The Chair of "Gender in STEM and Urban and Regional Planning. Feminist Studies in Science, Technology and Society ", lays the foundations for a transdisciplinary research agenda and focuses on three research perspectives and their contingencies and entanglements.

  1. The study of scientific cultures
  2. Epistemology
  3. How developments in STEM+ are used/applied.

In doing so, I hope that the gender and diversity aspects of STEM and Urban and Regional Planning can be analysed and systematically and reflexively integrated back into the disciplines. Both the current and historical approaches of feminist science, technology, and planning sciences will be included in this research approach. "

Since the newly developed TU Berlin study certificate at the ZIFG in 2012, Gender Pro MINT, the Chair is also responsible for advising the Praxisprojekte (practical projects) in the module and final projects of the program.

Student assistant Émilie Filion-Donato and Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Sahra Dornick work and research at the Chair.

The Chair in "Gender in STEM and Urban and Regional Planning / Feminist STS" is funded by the Berlin Equal Opportunity Program (Berliner Chancengleichheitsprogramm, BCP).
